Carolyn E. Barley , a lifetime resident of Liberty, NY, passed away on Sunday February 3, 2013 at Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, NY at the age of 95.
She was born on October 20, 1917 in Liberty, NY to the late John H. and Edna Grant Ernhout.
She was the widow of Winfield Barley who predeceased her in 2007.
Carolyn was a graduate of Liberty High School and Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. Upon graduation, she returned to Liberty where she spent the remainder of her life. It was here she met "Win", the "Love of Her Life", to whom she was married for 66 memorable years.
She was a faithful life-long member of the Liberty United Methodist Church. During those many years she was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Couples Club, and the Church Choir. She was also the Director of the Junior Choir and volunteered in the church's thrift shop. She was a charter member of the Town of Liberty Volunteer Ambulance Corps and was active in the Catskill Region A.A.C.A. Carolyn was an officer of the Liberty-Loomis Hospital Auxiliary and co-ran the hospital's gift shop until the closing of the hospital. Later in her life, she enjoyed working for American Greetings as a merchandiser at Rite Aid in Liberty for over 15 years.
A family statement reads: Carolyn enjoyed some of the "Best Times of Her Life" volunteering at Liberty-Loomis Hospital where patients and visitors alike were met with a smile and made to feel that someone really cared. Family was the most important part of her life. Talking about her four granddaughters and five great-grandchildren always made her smile. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and will always be remembered by those who met her as a "True Lady".
Carolyn is survived by one son, John Randy Barley and his wife Linda; two daughters, Cindy Short and her husband Don and Karen Jones and her companion Bill Beach, all of Liberty; four grandchildren, Amanda Short of White Lake, NY, Melissa Scheidelman and her husband Scott of Cazenovia, NY, Allison Pena and her husband Brian of Lexington, SC and Heather Barley and her companion Bill Lathrop of Columbia, SC; great-grandchildren, Jake, Alex and Abby Scheidelman and Laney and Gabby Pena; a cousin, Nancy Johnston and her special longtime friend Evelyn Case. She was predeceased by her son-in-law Arthur Jones.
Friends may call on Tuesday February 5, 2013 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Ramsay's Funeral Home, 275 S. Main St. Liberty, NY
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 6, at 10:30 AM in the Liberty United Methodist Church, 170 N. Main St. Liberty with Rev. John Thomason and Rev. Duane Buddle officiating. Interment will be in Liberty Cemetery, Cold spring Rd., Liberty following the services.
