Walker Lee Tompkins, known by his close friends as Leroy, was born on June 3, 1935 to Henry Hercules and Mae Cooper Tompkins in Augusta, GA. He was one of fourteen children. He passed away on Tuesday November 22, 2016 in Harris, NY.
In 1949, he came to New York City with his parents, brothers and sisters who had stayed in the south until their parents decided to bring them up north to be reunited with their grandmother, the late Nellie, brother, the late Johnson and sister Helen.
He received his education from the New York City Public School System.
Leroy began his boxing career in Philadelphia, PA in the lightweight division. With his strong passion for the arts, he relocated to the Catskills, where he started the boxing federation. In the early '70s, he trained in Ki Shin Do with the forefathers. In Liberty, NY, he was one of the first who had been licensed and received his black belt. He won numerous awards in the field of boxing, as well as in the martial arts. In Swan Lake, NY, Leroy opened his own boxing/martial arts training gym called Leroy's Health and Fitness Center, where he trained many students in the boxing/martial arts disciplines.
For many years, Leroy worked as a security officer at two prominent hotel establishments: Stevensville in Swan Lake, NY and Brown's Hotel in Loch Sheldrake, NY.
Leroy was a soft-spoken, well-respected individual, who had a heart of gold. In his quiet, but generous way, he helped anyone in need and never looked for anything in return. Many who have grown to know Leroy understand that he was passionate about what he believed in and he was taken seriously and not one to be reckoned with.
