Sumner L. Wice lovingly known as "Jackie, Nook, and Papa Jack", 85 of West Hartford; a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November, 18, 2014 at Saint Francis Hospital.
He was born in Hartford, CT., on June 10, 1929; he was the son of the late Benjamin H. and Susie (Katz) Wice.
Sumner was known for his infectious upbeat personality. He was a true people's person. He and his brother Raymond were the former owners of the Thomas Hooker Coffee Shop, Thompson Steak House and the Madison Café. Sumner was also the sole proprietor of the Welcome Package Store as well as D.J.'s Restaurant in Wingdale, NY. Together with his brother Ray, they were proud sponsors of many amateur teams in the Hartford area. He loved his New York Yankees, UConn Women's Basketball and his conservative radio talk shows.
Sumner was predeceased by his wife Deborah (Dee) Wice, his brother Raymond and sister-in-law Charlotte and Funny Wice. He leaves behind one daughter Valorie and son-in-law Frank Exner of Woodbourne, NY., one son Saul Wice of Nashua, NH., three grandchildren Ian and Cody Exner of Woodbourne, NY and Katelyn Kipp and her husband Trevor and soon to be born great grandson, and one brother Marshall Wice. He also leaves behind 6 nieces and nephews, 14 great nieces and nephews and a great great niece and nephew and old and dear friends Lenny "Schnip" Feldstein and Danny Kagan.
A graveside service will be held Friday, November 21, 2014 at 11:00am at the Hartford Mutual Society Cemetery on Wolcott Road, East Granby. Following the service a gathering will be held at the home of his nephew Michael Wice and his wife Carol, 24 Hampton Lane, Bloomfield, CT.
