Celestine "Cel" Gilliard, 80, of Woodridge, passed away at her home with her family on January 13th 2021, after a long and hard fought battle with her heart condition.
Celestine was one of 13 children. Born to the late Bennie and Helen Gilliard, in Cross, South Carolina on August 1st, 1940. After graduation, in the late 1950's, she moved to Woodridge NY.
Celestine worked at the Sullivan County Laundry for over 30 years until retirement. After retiring, She spent her time with her family, friends, and loved ones simply enjoying life, spreading her love everywhere she went. She thoroughly enjoyed gardening, and possessed an amazing green thumb. Cooking her traditional southern dishes for everyone always brought her joy. Celestine had an amazing connection with God, and was a follower of Christ. Her greatest pride was taking care of those that she loved. She was a phenomenal mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law to her Children: Helena and Everald, Grandchildren: Kurrim and Evyonna, and Daughter-in-law: Trevonne.
Celestine was predeceased by her brothers William Gilliard, Rufus Gilliard, Sisters Viola Jefferson, Inez Gilliard, Dorothy Gilliard and Charlotte Gilliard. She is survived by her sisters Daisy Lee of Eutawville, SC, Annie Silas of Boston, MA, Shirley Jackson of Cross, SC, Vivian Gilliard of Woodridge, NY, Alma Smith of Boston, MA, Lillie Merchant of Boston, MA and her best friend/sister Betty-Jean Lawrence of Queens, NY. She also leaves behind countless nieces, nephews, and friends.
A visitation will be held from 1 to 2pm on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 396 State Route 52, Woodbourne, NY 12788. A funeral service will follow immediately at the funeral home. Guidelines set forth by the State of New York will be followed, masks and social distancing are required at all times.
