Heyward Gilmore was born July 29th, 1927 in Lamar, SC to the late Mr. Thomas Gilmore and Mrs. Rebecca Evan Gilmore. He is the youngest of twelve children. Early Saturday morning August 13, 2022, Heyward heard and answered God’s call to come home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Morie Poole-Gilmore and two grandchildren Desaree Gilmore and Carl Johnson.
He worked as a laborer during his earlier year in Hartsville, SC. On May 5, 1949, he married Morie Poole. This union was blessed with two children, Alphonso Gilmore and Linda Gilmore-Graham. Heyward also was blessed with three additional children, Robert Poole, Selma Brabham, and Carolyn Johnson.
Seeking a better life for his family, Heyward moved to Sullivan County, New York. Here he worked as a truck driver at Inter-County Farmers Cooperative in Woodridge, NY. He also was employed at Monticello Raceway as a laborer, and finally retired from Fallsburg Central School where he worked from 1974 to 1994, as a valued and dependable custodian.
Heyward knew and loved our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was a loving brother and father. One of Heyward’s greatest enjoyments was fishing. His friends and family members often spoke of and were treated to some great meals, such as fish and grits.
