Obituary of Robert Joseph Rothermel
Robert J. Rothermel (90), of Smallwood, New York, passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife Mary (Marie) Rothermel by his side.
Robert, fondly known as Bob, was born to Earl and Mary Ellen Rothermel, on February 7, 1933, in Ridgewood, New York. Bob loved sports, especially baseball. He loved playing it, watching it and coaching his sons and their school teams. He was the Athletic Director for Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal School in Ridgewood where his children attended.
Bob is survived by his wife, Marie and their four children, Robert Rothermel (Colleen), Kevin Rothermel, Judy Yates, and Lori Anest (Peter). He is also survived by his eight grandchildren, Samantha Ciorciari (James), Heather Chestnut (Isaiah), Rachel Rothermel, Keri Gilmore (Tommy), Paige Bullen (Ricky), Kaylin Anest, Matthew Anest and Ryan Rothermel; his two great-grandsons, Jake Gilmore and James Ciorciari, as well as daughter-in-law Linda Sindoni (Frank), and his many beloved nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters-in-laws, cousins, and friends who were like family. Bob was predeceased by his son-in-law Darryl Yates.
Bob entered the Army as an MP in 1954. After being honorably discharged he started his career with Equitable Life Insurance. He then went to work as a New York State Supreme Court Officer, spending over 30 years on the job before retiring and moving to Smallwood, New York, where he spent all his summers since he was a child.
Aside from his love of family, and baseball, Bob was also passionate about writing and politics. He served his community of Ridgewood as a District Leader for over 10 years and was a valued member of the Ridgewood Democratic Club. Bob wrote articles for the Long Island Press and The Ridgewood Times. His articles focused primarily on sports and Community interest. Bob spent his spare time working with various community groups in Ridgewood geared towards Community Advocacy for senior citizens.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm on Friday, July 28, 2023 at Colonial-Ramsay Funeral Home, 3534 State Route 55, Kauneonga Lake, NY 12749. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10am on Saturday, July 29th at St. Joseph’s Mission Church, 8 Gale Rd., Mongaup Valley, NY. Burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
