Richard George Duryea a past long term resident of Yorktown Heights/ Somers New York passed away on Monday, February 27, 2017 at Orange Regional Medical Center. He was 54.
He was the son of the late George and Lois Higgins Duryea, born on March 21, 1962 in Dobbs Ferry, NY.
Richard graduated from Somers High School and continued his education at Mercy College and proudly graduated from there in 1985 with his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and Radio/TV Communications. He was a huge fan of the Pittsburg Penguin Hockey team. He enjoyed going to the local speedways and loved cats. He was a very diligent craftsman in cabinet making following in his father's footsteps as both skilled craftsmen in wood. He enjoyed working with his hands; he took joy in carefully detailing to specifications Pinewood derby cars for friend's children. He was an avid concert attendee for years from Tammy Wynette to Metallica, often going with his father who joined him, and loved his experience as a DJ at his college for a period of time in his studies of Radio. He was a genuinely kind and sincere friend to all that knew and loved him, he will be deeply missed as he was loved by many friends and extended family.
He had an extraordinarily close relationship with his father George, who was a decorated WWII Veteran. On a regular basis they would go fishing and hunting and spend as much time together as possible. His mother, Lois, was a homemaker and active in assisting Richard with his educational and recreational pursuits in school, scouts, and was an engaging parent in school activities for many years creating loving memories for Richard.
He is survived by extended family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved him.
There will be a chapel service on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Ferncliff Cemetery, 280 Secor Rd, Hartsdale, NY 10530 at 12:00pm.
Donations in his name can be made to the local feral cat rescue agencies T.A.R.I. 60 Enterprise Pl, Middletown, NY 10941 and or Veterans of World War II charities in honor of the love he had for his father.
