Sam was more than a father to me. He was a friend and confidant. He was the first to kick me in my ass, when I did wrong and first to pat my back, when I did good. I first met Sam at a local bar (Running Deer Inn) in 1984. He was the bartender and I was only 17 (2-3 months shy of legal age back then). My friends and I strolled in, filthy from dirt race dust, looking for a quick beer or two, when we noticed a short guy, wearing a cowboy hat, behind the bar checking I.d.’s. He told us he knew our parents and where we lived, gave us each a beer on the house and then go home.
Funny thing was, he only knew me and my mother (Iris). What a pisser, had us all fooled. Except the 18 year olds.
